I am in need of a new year

This one sucked.

My Tim Ward inspired resolutions.

• Print a series of 3 foot or bigger photos
• Listen for 5, talk for 1
• Get in where I fit in
• Bro down with the bros more
• Noseblunts on mini ramps
• Switch nose manual the stupid manual pad @ camp
• Come home to Montana in the spring or fall
• No or minimal temper tantrums
• Learn the art of being ok
• Cut my fucking hair and mail it off
• Quit stressing about stuff I have no control over
• Go to Arizona with Charlie and Nate
• Spend more time in the darkroom
• Stay away from facebook and all the online narcissistic weirdos
• Have a doctor figure out what is up with my shoulder
• Gain 10 lbs (I know I sound like a tard, but it is fucking hard for me to do)
• Snowboard

These images are from my photo final last semester. I would post my artist statement, but I don't have it on my computer. You can make up what they mean and be pretty close to the mark.

To help rip me out of my bummer session of life I have been experiencing as of recent I have been spending a few weeks in my hometown of Missoula Montana. It has been amazingly helpful to be around my friends and family. They should bottle up Missoula and sell it as an antidepressants.

I went snowboarding (which was fucking fun) and had to borrow some pretty pink boots and raver gear from my pal Jake. I was the best dressed guy on the slopes. I grew up snowboarding and just kind of lost interest in my early 20s, but I"m not going to wait another 8 years till I go snowboarding again.

Lance has 3 kids and a wife, that doesn't slow him down.

I love these guys. Both of them are fathers/husbands.

Total Eclipse of the Heart or Moon

Tonight I watched the eclipse of the full moon right after my mom picked me up from the airport in Missoula. I haven't been back to my hometown in a few years and with my life being in a bit of a mess it feels good to be in a familiar place.

Missoula is in a valley so it is often socked in with clouds, but tonight the moon gods were on our side and the clouds parted so my mom and me could watch the eclipse. The moon was eclipsed @ 12:41 and I don't think I have ever seen my mom awake at nearly 1 am. It was a special event.

Here is a funny conversation between me (ryan) and my mom.

The Office

I have watched almost every episode of The Office in the last week. I knew nothing about the series before i started to Netflix it, and now I have no idea how I made it this long without it.

Also, I am in love with Pam. Serious dream woman material.

The advice I like to give to young artists, or really anybody, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work.

All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens.

Ah umm

My mind is racing. I am 10,000 steps ahead of right now. My life is hanging over a ledge. Who is coming? Who is going? Where should i be heading? I'm learning and living in the middle of a few important lessons right now. I walk when I need to think clearly and as I feel right now i need to walk and keep walking. I have no idea where I will be in a few months. I do know I'm going to try my hardest to be a good friend and smile at everyone I pass along the way.

The future is unwritten

Take Our Jobs

More good quotes from Stephen Colbert's opening statement to congress about immigrant workers lack of rights.

"Maybe the easier answer is just to have scientists develop vegetables that pick themselves. The genetic engineers over at Fruit of the Loom have made great strides in human-fruit hybrids."

"This is America. I don't want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American, then sliced by a Guatemalan, then served by a Venezuelan, in a spa where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian."

"I am not going back out there. At this point, I break out into a cold sweat even at the sight of a salad bar."

The Air

The air in Portland tonight has a little bit of something special in it.

The best temperature i have ever felt. Warm, slight breeze, sunset over looking the costal mountain ranges, feeling tired the honest way from 4 days of using my brain. I want to go skate and do some work.

Damn, sometimes the life thing is pretty good to an old fella like myself.

3 month exposure of the sun's path shot in the high Mojave desert.

This is proof that I used to be a street rat. This is a Skateboarding ticket I got skating the EMB in Sept. 97. 3 months after I moved to San Francisco. Fresh outta Montana right into the fucking jumble of SF. I miss those days of skating and not really thinking about anything else.

I never ended up paying this ticket. I remember trying to call the court about it and ended up being on hold for 30 minutes only to be transfered to another person who put me on hold. After about an hour of that treatment I decided to say fuck it and take my chances. Never heard back about the $285 that I owed the city of San Francisco.

I'm pretty hyped I saved this little skate souvenir.

pretty much

Ronnie Creager came to skate camp

Yeah the guy has been a professional skateboarder for like 15 years. Hes a big timer, but not too big to eat shit on the log roll fully clothed.

Skate Rats

We had the coolest skateboard kids at camp this week. They made me so hyped on skateboarding and my job. After 18 years skateboarding is still amazing to me, but it is way different @ 31 than it was @ 15. Being around these kids lets me see them experience the same feelings I had when I was a dirty little skate rat. I LOVE THIS SHIT.

My weird job

Everyday that I am @ camp I have a point in my day where the weirdness of what goes on here kicks me in the face. Seriously things that go on here are not going on anywhere else in the world. This place is a temple of weird. Here are a few goofy pics of yesterday.

Skate 4 Money???? Modern day skateboarder attitude. When I was a kid my thought was "skate to be the lamest dude @ school."

We set up a crazy ass bungee thing that takes 5 dudes to stretch out and then put it in a guy on a skateboards hands. Going from 0-30mph in about 4 seconds without a hill or pushing.

This is what I look like when I'm scared and going 30 mph. You can see the bungee handle that I just let go of in the right of the picture. Goofy ass pose.

We made a new friend

So, some pals and I were sitting around shootin the shit when we started to talk about chatroulette. we were all newbies, but we really wanted to talk to some naked horny dudes. What we ended up finding was a 68 year old naked fisherman from the Netherlands, who was down to do pretty much anything wee demanded. So I did what any person in this situation would do and took some screen shots. I don't think I quite understand the naked dude chatroulette thing yet, but I do think it is amazingly funny. Enjoy......

ps. the text is amazing & sorry bout the penis thing.

Camp Stuff

I am up to my gills in little dirty hand skateboard kids. I love it. I revert into a 15 year old candy eating dirt face. I am teaching a few kids every week how to screen print shirts. Its cool to see what kind of weird stuff they come up with to screen.

Diego Printing up his Shake Junt shirt. I have no idea what shake junt means.

Susan Derges

There are photographers who have produced work and ideas that I am 100% envious of. Susan Derges is one of those artist. Her creativity and lack of camera use in her photography is seriously mind numbing. She has created a direct relationship with her images and the organic environment. I am serious in love with the idea of the natural environment being the main factor in creating abstraction. We take our realities as fact, and when we let a brainless object record our surrounding they never appear as we think they do. She has a ton of different series, but my favorite 2 are Chladni and River Taw.

In the series Chladni she sprinkled carborundum powder directly onto photographic emulsion where it was exposed to sound waves at different frequencies. The vibrations of the frequencies on the emulsion created abstract, organic shapes in the final black and white prints.

In the series River Taw she takes long sheets of color photo paper and submerges them in a river bed thet is near her darkroom. She lets the ambient light and the refraction of the flowing river water expose the emulsion. She then pulls the wet paper from the river and processes through.

Here is her website: Susan Derges

I answered yes to all of these questions, and I clearly need instant relief from this world.

When did it become common place for everyone to pick on rollerbladers? I thought that was just a skateboarder thing. Fucking funny.

I sat around all morning making these little comic box dialogs, while making myself bust out in laughing fits. Sometimes I think I am pretty funny (sometimes I also think I am an idiot). I will share more this week, I didn't want to kill anyone by over loading them with my amazing humor. JK. If anyone needs me I will be sitting in front of my computer making these till next fall.

Well I have proof that he is a jerk. Tim showing his true colors by knocking over a 5 year old girl in a bunny helmet. What I wish I could show you all is how he yelled at the poor defenseless child after knocking her to the ground. Tim has a bad case of hocky temper. See for yourself.

Richard Avedon

I have a challenge for you all. Try to figure out the significance of this image and comment your thoughts. It is an odd fashion photo especially for the time (doesn't show the woman's face), it is a great composition (obviously staged). Think about the time frame (post WWII) and fashion.

One of the greatest fashion photographers of all time. Before they all became dull as hell.

I have been weighing some serious pros and cons of life as of late. Its spring and I want to be doing more than learning in a classroom. I want to be more active in pursing creative outlets, and opportunities. I love going to school, and I am serious about my education, but sometimes I don't feel that education is serious about me. Hoops to be jumped through.

Its always a good thing to question what you are doing every now and then. Here are some pictures I took last week, nothing too crazy.
