August 15, 2010 - August 15, 2011

A year long Solargraph of the sun rising in the Mojave desert. The pinhole camera was set out on August 15, 2010 and picked up on August 15, 2011.

It was a hard year.

Hot off the presses (or 11880)

Just got done printing a new photo for my skateboard light project. The photo is of one of my favorite skateboarders Michael Kryger doing a nollie flip. This one is a commission for a local auction in February. The starting bid is $1000 and the curator of the auction already thinks she has a prospective buyer for this sucker. Its off to the framers tomorrow which will be a pricey endeavor (luckily I don't have to spring for it).

Camera Obscura Helmet

I made myself a camera obscura helmet. Thats right, a wearable 17 inch focal length camera obscura. It is made out of thin plywood, a cloth neck cinch, Duralar and acrylic focusing screen, and your head fits comfortably into an attached skateboard helmet. You can walk around with it on your head and see the world upside down.

There is something about seeing someone walk around with a box on their head that makes me smile.

This is one of my all time favorite campers. This is his 2nd year at camp and I hope he keeps skating and coming to camp. He is 100% out of his mind. He is dirty, his helmet is always way too big with pads hanging out, his pants are usually falling down, and he is a skate rat. I can't wait to show him this video in 10 years when he is a too cool for school 18 year old.

Kids like Daniel are the reason is why I do what I do.

I played photographer today with all my gadgets. Right after I took this photo a guy came up to me and asked me if I filmed rap videos.

I agree 100% in a less obvious way.

Nothing Is Original

This is one of the best things I have ever read that applies to art and the trials and tribulations that go hand in hand with the making of art. I know personally I put an immense amount of pressure on myself to make, make, make. I need my ideas to flow like water and in reality they tumble along like chunks of cement. Sometimes you get big lumps of good stuff and sometimes you don't get much but some dust.

Get Hyped

I made a giant wheat paste image for Woodward West skate camp. It is the largest photo I have ever made @ 24'x8'. I used about $150 worth of ink to print this puppy. Hope you like it.

Another summer of skate camp. I have to deal with the dumbest shit imaginable at this place, but on the opposite end of the spectrum I get to make new friends every year. 13 years of booger nosed buddies. Its to the point that I've had grown men in business suits come up to me all excited to tell me that i was their instructor 10 years ago. That is the reason I'm still here.

For design I made an instilation of 2500 plastic army men all painted bright yellow and blocked off an 11'x11' square in the main hallway of my school. The concept was simple. You either have to go around or walk through em. Nothing more than little pieces of plastic, but they will send people walking out of their ways to avoid them. People took a little coaxing before they were willing to walk over them, one guy jumped em, but once the seal was broken by the most unexpected lady it was on.
Interesting experiment. We like to avoid the ideas of what army men do in real life too, but we have little yellow ribbons that say we don't.

Piss Christ

Some Christian protesting crazies decided to throw a hammer through Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ" photograph. I think this has happened a few times to Andres Serrano's artworks. He's been pissing people off for a long time, no pun intended. Its interesting work and I think a lot of people miss the point of his concept, but I think that is what happens when you start adding piss and jesus together. Its so easy to have an opinion and a reaction, while it is a bit harder to really try to unravel what the message could be. Christian's who have a problem with Serrano's work are just seeing it as a crucifix in piss, while maybe the artist intention is to convey that society as a whole treats the ideals of Christ poorly. I watched this great interview with a nun who is an art critic and she gets it and calls it what it is. Watch away.

Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei is my new favorite contemporary artist. He is a badass. He cuts up 18th century chinese tables and rearranges them and puts them back together. He drops and paints 18th century Chinese vases. He fills a giant space with 100 million handmade and painted porcelain sunflower seeds. Most of all he does an amazing job pissing off the Chinese government.

He focused a ton of his art and influence on exposing an alleged corruption scandal in the construction of Sichuan schools that collapsed during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. He created a giant sign on the outside of the Tate Modern out of kids backpacks, which represented all the backpacks he saw in the rubble of the collapsed schools after the earthquake.

I can't do him justice with my words. The guy rules, look him up.
